Outsourcing: Threat or Opportunity

In the past few months concerns about outsourcing have surged to truly vexing proportions in almost all sectors of the U.S. corporate world. In a recent edition of the Wall street Journal, Maher (2004a) presents a statement by John McCarthy, vice president of Forrester Research Inc., who estimates that “as many as 588,000 U.S. white-collar jobs will be ‘off-shored’ by 2005 -- and a total of 1.6 million by 2010” (p. B1).

While in the not so far past mainly lower level jobs were exported to countries offering low labor costs, today every profession is in jeopardy, even the jobs of accountants, analysts, tax-professionals, architects, attorneys, radiologists, or technical writers, to name a few. The idea of telecommuting has expanded: the positive sound that this job flexibility tool used to have is not so positive anymore. Once upon a fairly recent time, telecommuting was perceived as a way to keep good workers active by accommodating them through working from home. However, this phenomenon has now expanded to a scale where workers don’t just work from their home in the next street, neighborhood, or town, but in the next continent as well!

The telecommuting shift has, thus, resulted in an elevation of the education levels of jobs that are crossing borders. So, what does the picture look like today? No matter whether you are a worker at the lowest echelon of an organization, or a top performer with an advanced degree, your job can be exported next year, next month, or even next week.

As soon as you find out that the U.S. company you work for has tested Bangalorian, Coimbatorian, or any other transcontinental waters, you can start counting down. And not even obtaining higher education will keep your job secure anymore! No wonder that more and more people get nervous about this whole trend: globalization was supposed to be a positive development, not a threatening one.

Before offering some positive attitudinal suggestions regarding outsourcing, here is a point to ponder: long before this trend became a reason for concern in the industrialized world, globalization was a nightmare to the lesser-developed, smaller-scale producing countries of this world. For the longest time these countries were beleaguered by mass production from their industrialized “brothers and sisters,” who could afford infinitely cheaper and larger scale production due to their massive and advanced setups. Becoming a partner in a regional trade community simply meant more prosperity for the prosperous, and more poverty for the poor. Borders had to be unlocked for giants who could now freely expand their state of the art services to neighbors who were still struggling with old-fashioned production processes and meager performance levels.

And now these “poor” countries are finally gradually emerging from their desolation: they offer their services on-location and through the Internet to corporations from industrialized countries, and obtain jobs at these corporations for a salary, considerably higher than what they used to get paid at home, yet significantly lower than what these corporations would pay to the workers in the industrialized home country! And that is what this entire outsourcing issue looks like from the other side of the mirror.

So, now that this has been placed on the table, here are some suggestions for workers in countries that endure job losses through outsourcing:

* Polish up your entrepreneurial skills. Smaller, lean-and-mean operations will have longer endurance than mammoths with little or no flexibility. “Seek out new possibilities outside your company,” suggests Maher (2004b, p. B8). This author refers to our human inventiveness by predicting that the offshoring of jobs will ultimately create new entrepreneurial opportunities. Maher cites Bharat Desai, chairman and chief executive of technology outsourcing company Syntel Inc., who declared, "The more repetitive jobs will go offshore, because it will be more cost effective and higher value to do that," (p. B8) This means that the less repetitive jobs will stay!

* Enlarge your horizons. Try to find out in what other industries than the one in which you are currently working your skills can be applied. Then, familiarize yourself with the wheelings and dealings of that industry, just in case…

* Engage in some in-depth self-exploration in order to find out what other work-preferences you have. Then, see what you can do to increase your capabilities in those other areas as well. The more diverse your skills, the greater your applicability in the rapid changing global work environment.

* Read! Listen! Surf the Net! Travel! Do everything you can to familiarize yourself with other environments than the one you are currently in. It may sound like an unrealistic, even silly suggestion, but think of all the people who have changed environments in the past for their betterment. If they could do it, you can too. If the world is becoming a global village, and we are all becoming “citizens of the world,” we may as well get ourselves comfortable in our new, enlarged “home,” right? Besides, even if you don’t want to go anywhere, it is always a plus to at least know what’s going on out there.

Here are, at the end of this little contemplation, two positive notes to boost motivation:

1. Threats can be seen as opportunities. And people are generally known for their resilience in turbulent times. In a recent Fortune article the following statement was posted: "One of the greatest assets of America, so underestimated there but so attractive to outsiders, is the ability of the U.S. to compete and come out on top, yet to absorb periodic shocks. I don't feel America is going to lose its economic dominance in any manner" (“Outrage Over Outsourcing,” 2004, p. 32).

2. Even outsourcing and the entire trend of globalization have their limitations. As Maher (2004a) puts it: “Geographic and cultural differences can make it hard for overseas workers to take over highly sophisticated jobs” (Maher, 2004a, p. B1).

In conclusion: Whether we choose to perceive outsourcing as a threat of an opportunity depends on our mindset, our actions, and most of all: our approach. As one of the four noble truths in Buddha’s teaching tells us, “As we are the ultimate cause of our difficulties, we are also the solution. We cannot change the things that happen to us, but we can change our responses” (“The four noble,” ¶4).

Outsourcing Your Packaging Is A Strategic Option

In a recent article in "Investors Business Daily", it was revealed that outsourcing has become more than just an easy way to cut costs. It has become a strategic tool that gives businesses flexibility and access to skilled personnel.

Since the advent of the Internet, and the rush to get online, companies have turned to outside professionals for services and solutions. Hiring a full-time IT technician is costly and not an efficient use of resources. Outsourcing allows companies to focus on their core businesses while gaining access to skilled labor when they need it.

* Outsourcing is a way to boost revenue
* Outsourcing is a way to cut costs
* Outsourcing eases labor shortages
* Outsourcing cuts payroll costs
* Outsourcing allows companies to focus on core competencies
* Outsourcing reduces or eliminates some capital expenditures

Outsourcing also allows businesses to change their corporate culture. If companies have renegade groups that are costly, ineffective, or difficult to manage, that group can be outsourced. This enables employers to change their workplace environment on-the-fly.

Still, most companies outsource projects in order to reduce costs and to gain outside expertise. A survey by "The Conference Board" indicated the following "Top-10" outsourcing objectives (numbers are approximate):

* Reduce Costs (40%)
* Access to Expertise (38%)
* Improve Internal Service (37%)
* Focus on Core Business (34%)
* Maximize Resources (27%)
* Internal Flexibility (25%)
* Improve External Service (24%)
* Changing Customer Needs (20%)
* World Class Standards (15%)
* Continuous Improvement (15%)

When deciding to outsource your packaging, the real litmus test is whether outsourcing adds value. Does it really reduce costs? Is the investment in in-house training and machinery too great? Does outsourcing a service give you access to people with greater skill sets or companies with more resources available to them?

Bottom line: outsourcing your packaging service needs is about more than just saving money. It is a strategic option for savvy businesses and entrepreneurs.

Super Achievers Have: Talent, Skill, Patience and Lady Luck!

As a golfer and coach, I've been thrilled to watch the U.S. Open golf championship this week.  I love the game, and have been privileged to coach some great players, so this tournament holds a special attraction for me.  As many of you know, this is one of the few world championships that is literally open to all comers.  If you can play golf, you can enter.   Entering, however, does not guarantee victory!

At the start of a new century, more and more of us are functioning like professional golfers.   Very few of us will spend our careers as a "team player" for a large corporation.   More and more of us will be "free agents", competing from one contest to another, or contracting our services for the length of a project, to solve a problem, or for a limited period of time.

And that means we have to be at the top of our game all the time!   That has never been necessary before.  In the past, most people either worked on the farm or worked for a corporation where it was possible to have a bad month, or even a slow year, and still get by.   Today, almost none of us have that luxury.

For more and more of us, the challenge is to hone our skills and show up, play a practice round, and then we get two days to show our stuff.  If we aren't one of the best by Friday afternoon, we go home.   No paycheck, no win, no glory!   It's a wonderfully free, individualistic and exciting world, but it can also be brutally honest and ruthlessly humbling.

Fortunately, golfers have taught me a few tricks to increase the chances of being around for the weekend, getting that paycheck and the glory, on Sunday afternoon!

First, follow your talents!   There has never been a time when it's been easier, or more important, to do what you love and what you are designed to do!   My grandfather was a wonderful, remarkable man, who spent most of his working years as a laborer in a lumber yard.   In many ways, I like to think those years of humbling, difficult work added to his greatness.  But most of us no longer have to do work we are not suited for.   Some golfers are born with incredible talent, while others earn their game with extraordinary dedication and hard work.   And some should consider doing something else.

I am absolutely convinced that the road to greatness, wealth, and personal satisfaction lies in taking the path of least resistance.   Follow your talents!   Do what brings you joy!  If you won the lottery, what would you do for fun?   What are you passionate about?  Do that.

Secondly, do it very, very well!   And, that brings us back to hard work.   Great golfers work incredibly hard.   There's an ad on TV that talks about Steve Elkington getting up before sunrise every single morning to hit 100 balls from the tee, 100 from the fairway, 100 from the sand, and 100 putts, before he goes to work "playing" golf!   If the first rule for greatness is "follow your talents", the second is, "become incredibly skilled".

There is no substitute for skill.  In any profession, and in almost any situation, the top 20% will do well.   If you know what you're doing, if you show up, if you get the job done, (and if you have a great coach!), sooner or later you'll win.   If you don't love what you do enough to practice and develop your skills, ask yourself,  "What's wrong?"

The third component is patience.   During this U.S. Open competition, two people have caught the imagination of the crowds, Payne Stewart and Matt Kuchar.  Payne has been around the PGA Tour for years.   He won the Open and started strong a few years ago, but has had 7 dry years of traveling the world, practicing and waiting for his time to come again.   And, he's done it all with a smile, a balance of cockiness and humility, and with patience.   Now, "out of nowhere", he leads the Open!   Think about those years in motel rooms, of missing cuts, of catching airplanes and eating restaurant food.   Whether he wins or not, Payne has made an extraordinary statement these past several years that has been punctuated with a huge exclamation point this week!

The other name the crowds are chanting is, "Kuch!" for Matt Kuchar, the 20 year old amateur with the great smile.   This kid has talent, skill, and while he's too young to really know about patience, he has the wisdom to know about humility.  He's "just glad to be here!"   Under the pressure, he missed some putts, but he's learning and he keeps on smiling.   Talent, skill, and the patience to learn.   This kid will do well!

Finally, super achievement involves the mystery we call "luck".   I think it's important to say that out loud!   Many motivational speakers focus only on their "secrets of success", claiming they have the "law" of money or the "law" of success on their side.   Well.   This week, Payne Stewart has had talent, skill, patience, and tons of incredible luck!   His ball goes in the rough, but sits up!   He hits a wild shot into a tree, and it bounces into the fairway!   At the same time, Colin Montgomery, who many rank as the best player in the world, hits a great shot that lands in the worst divot on the fairway.   Go figure.

By definition, you can't count on luck to make up for lack of talent or lack of preparation.  And, there's no use blaming "bad luck" for poor choices or stubbornness or bad judgment.   Success comes from acknowledging luck, then going about your business the best way you know how.   Many people have been credited with the following quote, although I believe it was actually Ben Hogan who said it first:   "Funny thing, the more I practice, the luckier I get!"

To achieve remarkable things, follow your talents and passions, work extremely hard at something you love so much you just can't help yourself, be patient, and perserver.  Lady luck shines most on those who work the hardest at what they do best!

Top 10 Traits of Highly Successful People - LEARN AND SUCCEED!

We have all read about people who are successful briefly. They win a gold medal, make a fortune, or star in one great movie…and then disappear. Or, there are those like Marilyn Monroe and Howard Hughes who achieve extraordinary success, at the cost of their own lives. These examples do not inspire me!

My focus and fascination is with people who seem to do well in many areas of life, and do it over and over through a lifetime. In entertainment, I think of Paul Newman and Bill Cosby. In business, I think of Ben and Jerry (the ice cream moguls), and a local hardware store owner who is famous for the money he’s give to children’s charities. As a Naval Officer, husband, businessman, politician and now as a mediator and philanthropist on the world stage, Jimmy Carter has had a remarkable life. We all know examples of people who go from one success to another.

These are the people who inspire me! I’ve studied them, and I’ve noticed they have the following traits in common:

  1. They work hard!  Yes, they play hard, too! They get up early, they rarely complain, they expect performance from others, but they expect extraordinary performance from themselves. Repeated, high-level success starts with a recognition that hard work pays off.

  2. They are incredibly curious and eager to learn.  They study, ask questions and read – constantly! An interesting point, however: While most of them did well in school, the difference is that they apply or take advantage of what they learn. Repeated success is not about memorizing facts, it’s about being able to take information and create, build, or apply it in new and important ways. Successful people want to learn everything about everything!

  3. They network.  They know lots of people, and they know lots of different kinds of people. They listen to friends, neighbors, co-workers and bartenders. They don’t have to be "the life of the party", in fact many are quiet, even shy, but they value people and they value relationships. Successful people have a rolodex full of people who value their friendship and return their calls.

  4. They work on themselves and never quit!  While the "over-night wonders" become arrogant and quickly disappear, really successful people work on their personality, their leadership skills, management skills, and every other detail of life. When a relationship or business deal goes sour, they assume they can learn from it and they expect to do better next time. Successful people don’t tolerate flaws; they fix them!

  5. They are extraordinarily creative.  They go around asking, "Why not?" They see new combinations, new possibilities, new opportunities and challenges where others see problems or limitations. They wake up in the middle of the night yelling, "I’ve got it!" They ask for advice, try things out, consult experts and amateurs, always looking for a better, faster, cheaper solution. Successful people create stuff!

  6. They are self-reliant and take responsibility.  Incredibly successful people don’t worry about blame, and they don’t waste time complaining. They make decisions and move on. Sometimes they are criticized for taking this to extremes – Jimmy Carter carried his own briefcase and a President "shouldn’t" do that!  Extremely successful people take the initiative and accept the responsibilities of success.

  7. They are usually relaxed and keep their perspective.  Even in times of stress or turmoil, highly successful people keep their balance, they know the value of timing, humor, and patience. They rarely panic or make decisions on impulse. Unusually successful people breath easily, ask the right questions, and make sound decisions, even in a crisis.

  8. Extremely successful people live in the present moment.  They know that "Now" is the only time they can control. They have a "gift" for looking people in the eye, listening to what is being said, enjoying a meal or fine wine, music or playing with a child. They never seem rushed, and they get a lot done! They take full advantage of each day. Successful people don’t waste time, they use it!

  9. They "look over the horizon" to see the future.  They observe trends, notice changes, see shifts, and hear the nuances that others miss. A basketball player wearing Nikes is trivial, the neighbor kid wearing them is interesting, your own teenager demanding them is an investment opportunity! Extremely successful people live in the present, with one eye on the future!

  10. Repeatedly successful people respond instantly!  When an investment isn’t working out, they sell. When they see an opportunity, they make the call. If an important relationship is cooling down, they take time to renew it. When technology or a new competitor or a change in the economic situation requires an adjustment, they are the first and quickest to respond.

These traits work together in combination, giving repeatedly successful people a huge advantage. Because they are insatiable learners, they can respond wisely to change. Because their personal relationships are strong, they have good advisors, and a reserve of goodwill when things go bad. And finally, none of these traits are genetic!  They can be learned! They are free and they are skills you can use. Start now!

Fresh Grad Life Tips: In Many Ways, Golf is Like Life.

Golf is an amazing mirror of life. Yes, other sports provide life lessons as well, but golf happens to be my favorite sport and the one I understand the best. It is an addiction, a mystical experience, a test of character, an escape, a source of rare joy and excruciating pain. No psychological test will tell you as much about a person's character as a round of golf. With the arrival of spring, here are some of my observations about golf and the game of life:

1. Expectations & Flexibility. Golf, like life, is not mastered in a season, and it is particularly frustrating if we approach it with stiff and inflexible expectations. Great golf begins with stretching, bending, loosening up, and matching my desired outcomes with the realities of a body grown lazy over the winter. A sense of humor, and a sprinkling of humility go a long way!

2. Clarity of Purpose. Many golfers never stop to think about why they play the game. To win? To have fun? For social reasons, or for the challenge? For the exercise? Just as striving to become rich and famous often creates frustration and disappointment, few will ever play professionally, and striving for perfection is a setup for "failure". Know why you play the game and where you find your satisfaction and joy in it.

3. Equipment. Most golfers play with clubs that don’t fit them, or that no longer suit their games. Graphite shafts and new club designs have revolutionized golf. Active golfers should have their clubs checked for loft, lie, and length, and have them re-gripped every season. Almost any job is easier with the right tools.

4. Solid Foundations. Golfers go to extremes. Some take lesson after lesson, trying to fix the tiniest flaw in their quest for the perfect swing. Others, ignore the classic foundations of grip, stance and swing in their eagerness to "do it my way." Success is usually found in a healthy balance of learning from the wisdom and experience of others, while celebrating your unique style and approach to the game.

5. Profitable Practice. On the day of a big tournament, I often go to the practice green and watch skilled, dedicated golfers practice missing putts. With a small crowd milling about, they quickly hit putt after putt, destroying their rhythm, timing and confidence. Then, in frustration, they wonder what ever happened to their carefully honed putting stroke! In golf, and in life, practice smart. Practice for success!

6. Smart Preparation. Tour players always play practice rounds. Ben Hogan used to walk the course at twilight before a tournament to learn all it’s hidden tricks and traps. Top players rehearse every shot in their imagination before going to the course. They prepare in advance so they are ready when the moment of truth arrives. It pays off.

7. Show up. The biggest challenge for many Nike Tour and other young players is to play their best golf without a nickel in their pocket, often lonely and far from home. They have reasons to be distracted. What are your excuses? Ram Das said, "Be here now." In golf, and in life, it’s hard to win if you don’t show up, or only show up for every-other swing!

8. Warm up. Every great athlete, the ones in the best physical and mental shape, respect their bodies enough to loosen up, stretch and rehearse before competition. Unfortunately, most amateurs don’t go to all that trouble. We jump out of the car, grab the clubs, and head for the first tee. Before any important event, arrive early, walk around, relax, and warm up to the task at hand.

9. Focus on Results. Every golf stroke creates a result. Sometimes the ball goes in the hole; sometimes it goes out of bounds. Golfers tend to focus (1) on the result they would have preferred, which is merely wishful thinking, or (2) on beating themselves up for being so "stupid", which is painful. Learn from every swing. Observe the results you actually get. Life never lies!

10. Review and Adjust. If you aren’t getting the results you want, find the reason. You can trust the ball; it goes where you hit it. If you want a different outcome, change your setup, routine, or other actions until you get the result you prefer. Someone said, "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is a mark of insanity." Successful people learn quickly; others learn eventually.

Have a marvelous day and a wonderful week, and I'll see you on the links!
