Clam AntiVirus

ClamAV is a free command line antivirus scanner for Unix systems. You can also integrate it with your mail server for scanning your email messages and attachments. It is able to scan inside archives like RAR archives, Zip archives, Gzip and Bzip2 archives (that is, it has unpacking engines for those types of compressed archives). If you are a programmer, you can even integrate the antivirus scanner into your own programs. This free antivirus program comes with source code that is released under the GNU General Public License. Prebuilt binary packages are available for numerous Linux distributions (Debian, RedHat / Fedora, PLD Linux, Mandrake), Microsoft Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, AIX, OSF and Solaris 8 (Sparc).

AntiVir Personal Edition

AntiVir Personal Edition is a free antivirus program for Windows computers. It has a resident component that monitors file movements for signs of viruses. It also allows you to scan your computer and repair files that have been infected. The program comes with a facility to automatically check the AntiVir website for updates to the virus definitions and download them. Updates are free.

AVG Anti-Virus

The AVG Anti-Virus software comprises a resident program that works in the background, an email scanner (checks your email for viruses), an on-demand scanner (eg, you invoke it to scan your system), the ability to repair certain infected files, and automatic updates of the virus definitions.

F-Prot Antivirus for Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and DOS

This is a great day trip from Manila. It starts with a boat ride for about an hour originating from the pier at the Manila Yacht Club. You will arrive back at the same location at 4pm.  We took the tour with Sun Tours. The lunch meal was GREAT! It was also great to see so many tourists in the Philippines.   We met people from Michigan, Tennessee, California, Florida, New York, Austria, Japan, and Costa Rica. Good Times!  

Corregidor is a small rocky island in the Philippines about 48 kilometers west of Manila which is stragetically located at the entrance of Manila Bay. This island fortress stands as a memorial for the courage, valor, and heroism of its Filipino and American defenders who bravely held their ground against the overwhelming number of invading Japanese forces during World War II.

Also known as "the Rock," it was a key bastion of the Allies during the war. When the Japanese invaded the Philippines in December 1941, the military force under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur carried out a delaying action at Bataan. Corregidor became the headquarters of the Allied forces and also the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth government. It was from Corregidor that Philippine President Manuel Quezon and General MacArthur left for Australia in February 1942, leaving behind Lt. Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright in command. It was at this time when the famous words were ushered by General Douglas Macarthur, I Shall Return!"

Although Bataan fell on April 9, 1942, the Philippine and American forces held out at Corregidor for 27 days against great odds. On May 6, 1942, their rations depleted, the Allied forces were forced to surrender Corregidor to Lt. Gen. Homma Masaharu of the Japanese Imperial Army after having successfully halted the Japanese advance on Australia. It was only two years and ten months later in March 1945 when the Allied forces under the command of General MacArthur recaptured Corregidor ... making good his promise to return to the Philippines.

The big guns of Corregidor are now silent and the ruins of buildings, structures, and tunnels in the island tell a very moving story of a war that has claimed so many lives. A visit to this former battleground is a memorable experience especially for those who cherish and value peace and freedom. In his speech delivered at the signing of the surrender of Japan aboard the U.S.S. Missouri at Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur said, "It is my earnest hope and indeed the hope of all mankind that a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past - a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance and justice."

Outsourcing Philippines: Yes Sir!

Those of you heading out into your first foray into outsourcing can benefit from this outsourcing Philippines tip. I believe this is a common attitude in other countries also, not just the Philippines.

The topic of this post evolved into a joke that can be used with 50% success in the Philippines. It goes like this:

Outsourcing Manager (Foreigner): "Please Don't Call Me "Sir""
Outsourcing Employee Response "Yes, Sir!"

Filipinos are a shy, proud and respectful sort of people. This translates into some barriers for outsourcers who are not familiar with local customs and traditions. The Filipinos natural shyness and pride can cause other communication problems or "misunderstandings", but for now we will concentrate on respect.

If you are a foreigner in the Philippines, you will be called Sir or Ma'am more times in one day than you have been called in any decade of your life. At first it is nice. You dream of your home country evolving to where everyone was this nice to each other. If you are like some of us here at PI Outsource and have a "Military" look, you will often get saluted while on the streets! Wowowee! It's all great right?

Then you notice...You are called Ma'am as often as you are called Sir!

Walk into 7Eleven, the greeter or greeters will shout at you as you walk in the door, "Welcome to 7Eleven, Sirmaam". It is pronounced as one word, Sirmaam.

Then you realize. It's in the manual!  The 7Eleven corporate manual probably reads like this; When customer enters store, please use the following greeting, "Welcome to 7 Eleven Sir/Ma'am". It must be like this in every corporate manual in the Philippines. Trust that you will be sirmammed to death during your stay in the Philippines.

What is the point? Sir and Ma’am are just empty words. The "respect" isn't there anymore. Filipinos don't realize that an occasional sir or ma'am is more effective and seems to feel less patronizing to most foreigners.

As a result of "Yes, Sir" being watered down to almost having no meaning at all, you should note that “yes sir!” does not always mean “yes sir”! This applies to outsourcing business as well as pleasure.  Yes sir could mean: I don’t know, I think so, I am listening but not comprehending or I don’t understand but you will go away soon so it’s ok.

Here's a conversation to illustrate my point.  I occasionally go to a place called Strumm's to hear live music. It is a nice music room, great place for a date. They also will rent the place with a band for your outsourcing team building or Christmas party.  One day, I am outside looking at the marquee of Strumm’s, where I see that on another night of the week a band called John Y Cash is listed as playing.

I ask the manager, "Is John Y Cash a Johnny Cash Cover band?"
Response, "Yes Sir"

Are you sure?
Response, "Yes Sir"

I sing a few bars of "Walk the Line"...and ask are you sure?
Response, "Yes Sir, Yes Sir"

You know the famous "Man in Black"?
Response, "Yes Sir"

The next week I gather five friends to go see John y Cash. Let's just say, one guy in the band was wearing black, but he was playing the trumpet. John Y Cash evidently went pop. There was not a Johnny Cash song to be heard!

In closing, remember when you are assigning projects that you get your workers to repeat or demonstrate their understanding of what you are trying to communicate. “Yes, Sir” means nothing. There are exceptions to every rule. Hire the exceptions! You have been warned!

Manila Philippines Taxi Tips

1. Before going in, ask the taxi driver if he knows where he's going. A good indication that he doesn't is when he doesn't say anything or waits for a few seconds before answering "yes". If you see the deer in the headlights look, go to the next cab.. Don't ask him if he knows where you're going while you're already inside and he is driving you already, it's too late!

2. Observe if he "flags down" the meter as soon as you enter the taxi. If he doesn't do it within one to two minutes, he would most be scamming you. Without explaining yourself, tell him to drop you off to the nearest stop and get another taxi.

3. If you find a taxi driver you like, it is best to have his cellphone number and ask him if he's willing to take you places when you text him. This is great when you're staying long. A good taxi driver is someone who has confidence, well-spoken and explains the route where you are going. He also knows how to properly shift his car and does not run traffic lights.

4. Some taxi drivers are reported drunks or drug addicts. Look them in the eye and search for that crazed look!

5. Always pay what's on the meter. Always bring P20 and P50 bills in your wallet. If you like the way he drives, a P20 tip would suffice.

6. Lock your doors while you're inside your taxi.

7. There will be certain places in the capital, where security guards of certain establishments (like the malls) hand over the car plates of the taxi. Don't lose that piece of paper.

8.. It is illegal for taxi drivers to turn down a customer. It happens all the time. If you want to report the driver, then you're doing everyone a favor.

9. Instead of taking a taxi, if you are feeling adventurous you can also ride the trikes, jeepneys and the FX's that ply the major thoroughfares in the city. Be fast and watch your head getting in and out of the jeepney.

10. In a crowded spot you may find people who will hail a taxi for you or draw you to a parked cab at the side of the road. I prefer to avoid them. Walk another block and hail a moving cab.

11. Do not smoke in a taxi in Manila. If you are caught there will be a hassle and a bribe. The taxi driver will say you can smoke and drive you buy a cop. The cop will bust you and they probably both split the bribe.

12. Wear your seatbelt in the front seat. It's the law.

Philippines pollution, especially in the major cities is horrible. Bring extra contact lenses when you visit the Philippinnes. Be sure to bring your glasses as well.

Like most major cities, Manila smog comes from the public transportation vehicles.  Jeepneys, buses and trikes are the biggest culprits.

Philippines city runners, here is a tip, run at night, not in the morning. Why? Because the poisons in the air actually settle to the ground overnight. When you run in the morning, the street level is actually covered in a blanket of poison. In the evening, when the ground is at it's hottest, the poisons are actually pushed higher in the atmosphere.

As an employer or outsourcer in the Philippines, you will notice your employees may complain and call out sick for "sore eyes". Be prepared.

Cell Phones (CellPhones) in the Philippines

A working cell phone can be had in the Philippines for about $45US. You would get a basic Nokia Model.  If you have a tendency to lose phones in taxis, the $45 cell phone is for you!

Want to spend a little more? Spend $160 and get a nice Asus CellPhone. They are jam packed with features like mp3, video, camera, a very nice LCD screen and case, all a great price.

Not using a Cell Phone? We have tried many VOIP phone service providers in the Philippines. We recommend Skype 100%. The call clarity and feature list are great for personal use.  You would not want to run a call center on Skype, but if you travel at all, you want a Skpye Out number.

Buy a telephone number in a country and city of your choice. People can call your Skype account using a normal telephone for the cost of a local call. Up to 10 different telephone numbers can call each Skype account.

It is amazing how the nicest people turn into crazed maniacs when they get behind the wheel of a car.  Driving in the Philippines, while not as crazy as in France, is quite something to behold.

I swear, the only time a Filipino changes lanes or makes a turn it is when it's in front of another car. They drive with the mentality of, if I don't see you, I go, so you better be ready to stop at anytime.  Red lights are ignored,  the traffic cops use a hand signal that looks like “stop” but anywhere else in the world,  it means to “go”.

The beeping, The incessant beeping. You can hear it everywhere. It is my number one peeve about Manila. Taxis think they can entice you to take a cab by beeping at you. People beep at each other for everything and well, nothing.  Of course, when you run a red light, you must beep through the whole intersection. I think beeping is what makes totally illegal actions legal! “Ok sir, I see that you beeped five times before you ran over that pedestrian, that was very thoughtful, you are free to go.”

Don't forget, crosswalks are ignored.  Filipino drivers will inch closer to the car in front of them so you can't cross between the two cars.

I propose that Makati and Manila government train and hire more ticket enforcers for unnecessary beeping. They would be called the "Beep Patrol". They would enforce the 500PHP fine for unnecessary beeping. They would earn 100 pesos per ticket. They would rake in so much money for the city it wouldn't be funny! Think about it... commissioned ticket enforcers for beeping, littering, vagrancy, urination, parking fines. It would clean up the city fast.

At least I pray it stops the beeping.
